Historical Background

Lunugala divisional area in Badulla district of Uva province is bordered by Bibila, Medagama in Monaragala district and Meegahakivula and Passara divisional secretariat divisions in Badulla district. Considering the topographical features of the division, the highlands range from 500 to 4500 feet above sea level, and more than 50% of the total land area of the region is steep terrain.

Historical information and folklore seem to be very important to explore information about the name of Lunugala and birth of the area for Lunugala local council area. In addition to the name Lunugala, this area is also known as Pattipola Koralaya. Both the names are a result of the same thing, traders used this area to trade their salt in the past. The area, which was the exchange center of the salt trade, has been referred to as Lunugala. Also, due to the fact that cattle used for transporting salt are herded in herds, it has also been used as pattipola.

There is also an opinion among the people that Lonagama later became Lunugala, as a minister named Lona who accompanied King Vijaya established a settlement in this area. It is believed that Lunugala area was a safe place especially during the Wellassa War of Independence. And the era of King Valagamba can be considered important in the development of this Lunugala area.

It was first established on April 01, 2011 as Lunugala Pradeshiya Sabha for the Lunugala Area of 28 Grama Niladhari zones. Before that there was a sub-office of the Pasara Pradeshiya Sabha. For the convenience of administration, the Lunugala Pradeshiya Sabha was established on April 01, 2011 at the Lunugala office which was a sub-office of the Pasara Pradeshiya Sabha for the area of 142.26 square kilometers.

Among the ethnic groups living in this division, the percentages of Sinhalese, Indian Tamil, Sri Lankan Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay, other population are 59.5%, 33%, 21.9%, 4.07%, 0%, 0% and 1.53% respectively. The highest percentage of the total population of the division is Sinhalese which is 39.5%.
